The red-bellied woodpecker make another visit to our feeder and birdbath. This time he lives up to his name and shows off his red belly.
If you look closely you will see the small reddish area by his feet.

A northern flicker was sighted this morning.
This wonderful bird is a woodpecker but it will spend most of it’s time foraging on the ground. You can watch them flicking and flipping over the leaves and substrate in search of insects especially ants. A recent study revealed that the contents of this bird’s stomach contained over 3000 ants!
That’s exactly what this one was doing.
This one is fairly easy to Identify. They have a small red patch at the nape of the neck and a black breast band. The belly is covered in spots. This one is a male. See the black streaks under his cheek? The female does not have these.
