Northern Cardinal

This bright colored bird is the official Bird of seven states!

They are extremely territorial and the males have no problems fighting or defending their territory. Sometimes they have been observed flying into windows, trying to attack their own reflection. This behaviour has actually hurt some cardinals.

The male is Bright red with a black mask on his face. The female is much more bland in color, almost brown. They are very common in rural areas and can be easy to attract to your bird feeder. They will eat seeds, nuts and berries. They have been known to actually eat directly from your hand if they have become comfortable enough.

We have a pair that visits our feeders every year. They will also bring their young to the feeder and teach them how to use it. We have observed a whole family of five at the feeder at once and the babies are noisy!
